This site just keeps getting better and better. Their photo gallery is beautiful and informative. Their post cards are great fun. There are now excellent videos. I would start your research here.

Mexico Connect: Día de los Muertos  
Mexico Connect is an online magazine about Mexico.  While some of the site is subject to subscription, much of the Day of the Dead resources are available without.  Good for background information in English and photos.
